Water Softener vs Whole Home Filter vs Reverse Osmosis: Which Do You Need?

“Do I need a softener or a filter?” is a question we hear a lot. The honest answer: it depends on what’s bugging you about your water. Each system does one job well. Here’s the cheat sheet.

A note on sodium

Salt-based softeners work by ion exchange, and JEA notes this can increase the sodium in your water. If anyone in your home watches sodium, under-sink RO for drinking water is a common pairing, and you can ask us about it at your test.

Common questions

Does a water softener filter the water?

Not really. A softener swaps out hardness minerals (calcium and magnesium). It does not remove chlorine taste, and it is not a drinking water purifier. For chlorine you want a chlorine filter; for extra-clean drinking water, reverse osmosis at the kitchen sink.

Do I need both a softener and reverse osmosis?

Not always. A softener treats the whole house for hardness. A point of use reverse osmosis system adds extra-clean drinking and cooking water at one sink. Many families start with one and add the other later.

What do most Jacksonville homes on JEA water need?

JEA water is hard in most ZIPs (about 7 to 22 grains per gallon on JEA's list), and many people also notice a chlorine taste. That is why a softener plus a chlorine filter, our Sweet Spot Dual Tank, is usually the best fit for JEA water. We confirm with a free test first.
