Well water treatment for sulfur smell & iron stains

If you're on your own well, you already know the signs: a rotten-egg smell in the shower, orange rings in the sink, crusty spots on the glass. We'll test your water, talk it through with you, and set you up with a system that fits your home, at a price you can see right here.

Sound familiar?

  • A rotten-egg smell, especially when the water first runs. The Florida Department of Health says that's usually hydrogen sulfide, which occurs naturally in Florida groundwater or comes from sulfur bacteria.
  • Orange, red or brown stains in sinks, tubs, toilets and laundry. That's usually iron, and the DOH notes iron and sulfur often show up together.
  • Scale and spots on faucets and shower glass, because well water here is often hard too.

One quick check before anything else: if the smell only comes from the hot water, the DOH says the water heater is the likely cause, not the well. Our guide to well water sulfur smell in North Florida walks through the full faucet test.

What the Sweet Well Water System is

It's a complete well water setup made from the same kinds of equipment we install everywhere: whole home filtration paired with water softening, set up for well water with sulfur smell and iron staining. Every well is different, so we size and set it up for your water after we test, rather than guessing from a brochure.

It goes in at your home's existing connection. We don't drill wells, work on pumps, or add or move water lines. Want better drinking water too? A point of use reverse osmosis system can be added at the kitchen sink.

Is a water softener enough for well water?

Sometimes. If your well water is simply hard, with no smell and no stains, a softener like the Sweet & Simple Softener ($1,499) may be all you need. A softener is built for hardness, not for a sulfur smell, and the DOH notes sulfur bacteria can even grow inside one. When smell or iron is part of the picture, the Sweet Well Water System is the better fit. We'll tell you straight which one makes sense for your water, and if neither does, we'll tell you that too.

Get a lab test for safety, too

No utility tests a private well for you. The Florida Department of Health recommends regular testing through a state-certified lab, including for coliform bacteria. The DOH also says the rotten-egg smell usually doesn't tell you how clean the water is. Our free in-home test is about choosing the right equipment. It doesn't replace a lab test, and we'll always say so.

How it works

  1. Free in-home test. We test your water and ask about the smell, the stains and how your family uses water.
  2. An honest recommendation. The Sweet Well Water System, a simpler softener, or nothing at all if you don't need it.
  3. Clean setup at your existing connection, set for your water.
  4. Test again after install so you can see the difference for yourself.

Well water treatment FAQs

Will a regular water softener work on well water?

A softener handles hardness (calcium and magnesium), and well water in North Florida is often hard. But a basic softener is not built for a rotten-egg smell, and the Florida Department of Health notes sulfur bacteria can even grow inside a softener. If your well has a sulfur smell or iron staining as well as hardness, that is what the Sweet Well Water System is for. We test first and tell you honestly which one fits.

How much does the Sweet Well Water System cost?

$4,799, posted price. Electrical outlet not included: you provide a working outlet, or our trusted licensed electrician can install one (quoted separately). Prices may vary by water source and install location; your final price is confirmed after the free water test, before any work starts.

Do I still need a lab test for my well?

Yes. The Florida Department of Health recommends testing private wells regularly through a state-certified lab, including for coliform bacteria. Our free in-home test is a different test for a different question, and it does not replace a lab test.

My well water only smells when the hot water runs. Is that the well?

Probably not. According to the Florida Department of Health, a smell that comes only from hot water faucets usually points to the water heater, not the well. In that case a well system may not be what you need, and we will tell you so.

Do you drill wells or work on well pumps?

No. We treat the water at your home's existing connection. We don't drill wells, service pumps, or add or move water lines.

Can I add better drinking water at the kitchen sink?

Yes. A point of use reverse osmosis system can be added at one sink for drinking and cooking water. It is call for price.
